Imagine walking into a cavernous library, and the sense of possibility and empowerment in being able to choose any story you'd like to read. Unfortunately, my 9th grade students currently do not have this opportunity, as our classroom library is understocked.
My 9th grade students come to Murray Hill Academy from middle schools all across NYC.
Many students are also transfer students, looking for an alternative academic environment and experience after not accumulating enough credits at their former schools. As my students transition to Murray Hill and go through many changes, they can use the experience of independent reading to help them discover and establish their unique identities.
My Project
I am requesting a wide variety of books that respects the diversity of my students' experiences and interests. At our school, we see each student as an individual; having a library full of different stories to reach out to all my students is very important. I am requesting many young adult literature titles that might reflect my students' own personal experiences. I'm also requesting lots of nonfiction books about science, history, ecology, health, and the environment, as well as biographies, autobiographies and graphic novels. I hope to begin a strong independent reading program in which students choose their own books, write and reflect on them, and share their experiences with their peers.
Having an expansive classroom library will better my 9th-graders' experience in English class and in life!
Given the opportunity to make their own choices about what they read will make reading personal, enjoyable, and enriching for them.
