My Project

I am a first-year teacher in St. Louis, MO. A classroom library is the heart of an ELA class, and as a 6th-grade ELA teacher, I want to provide students with a wide selection of texts. However, since I am a first-year teacher, I do not have the resources to build a classroom library on my own. I tried to use my own books from middle school to start my library, but I want to make sure my students have options for "windows and mirrors" in the books they read. Through "windows," they will learn about the experiences of others, and through "mirrors," they will see their own experiences represented. Using my small selection left over from the early 2010s will not allow all students to have "windows and mirrors," so I have selected a mix of engaging and inclusive texts to build my library and spark a love for reading in my 6th graders.

Everyone is a reader; they just need to find the right book.
