I teach in an elementary school in Austin, Texas close to the downtown area. My 18 students are a mixture of socio-economic and academic levels. I find I must provide quite a range of differentiated instruction levels to meet all of their needs. I provide hands-on learning and opportunities for them to work together and collaborate. They are very social and love school!
My 7 year old students love using technology daily in our classroom and are learning to read while exploring ideas in literature.
My Project
The project that I have selected brings some really amazing books for Guided Reading to our classroom. These books are recommended by the Great Books Foundation and I intend to read to my students and use the Shared Inquiry method to discuss the text over several days. Shared Inquiry is designed to help readers think critically about substantive ideas, share thoughts and opinions and find meaning in outstanding literature.
My classroom does not have a pencil sharpener, so I have been using a small one that I bought 7-8 years ago.
I would love for students to be able to sharpen their own pencils, but we need something sturdy for first grade hands!
Our classroom currently has 4 headphones that I bought myself at the under $5 store. We could really use a class set of headphones for use in the computer lab!
