My 5th grade students come into the classroom each day ready to learn. Even with all the challenges they face outside of school, they come in with a smile on their face, ready to start a new day. I love that each and every one of them comes in with the expectation that they are going to face challenges and they are going to overcome them. They try their best at anything they do and I admire each of them for that.
These items will ensure that they have access to books they enjoy that they may not be able to afford or read in the library, be able to express their artistic abilities in the way that they want to and overall just be able to feel comfortable in their learning environment.
What makes my students stand out is that many are from a low socio-economic area. They do not have a lot of access to healthy food, books or even having the experience of having new things in their life. Even with the challenges they face, they are able to come to school each day and work as hard as they can in order to be successful.
