My Students

My students are EXTREMELY intelligent. They are witty, insightful, and shrewd--they see through BS immediately. They love to laugh and talk--especially to cap on each other. They live in a world that has forced many of them--through social media and circumstance--to be adults too soon. Most work many hours a week, and many also care for younger siblings. While they are often told that their education should be their highest priority, often times that is not a realistic expectation.

I ADORE my students--they are more full of life than you can possibly imagine.

Their thoughts and ideas are complex and multi-faceted. They see things in layers of nuance that many adults lack the willingness and patience to see. Their strengths are extraordinary--but they live in a world that constantly points out their weaknesses.

My Project

I want my students to revel in an atmosphere of learning and discovery. My classroom should be a cozy tome of books, games, puzzles, art supplies, and other things that will encourage exploration. My classroom is a safe space for them--a peaceful break from the rigors of their pandemic-era teenage lives. I want it to look and feel like a safe space. I want them to remember how to PLAY.

I want my 10th graders to feel like KIDS in my classroom.

I want them to remember when they were curious about learning new things. I want them to choose to put down their devices and engage with their classmates. I want them to forget that they are learning--even thought they will be!--and to enter my classroom each day, exhaling with relief to be here.
