I teach at an elementary school in a rural area of Northern Wisconsin. We have about 400 students in grades 4K-6. We have a dedicated teaching staff and are lucky to have supportive administration.
Our school district has a high poverty level.
My first grade class has 15 students; 9 of them receive free and reduced price lunches. Despite the high poverty level, the parent support is strong, my students have a high attendance rate, and they are eager to learn!
My Project
"Number Sense isn't taught, it's caught." - Christina Tondevold
My first grade team and I have been doing a lot of professional development on teaching number sense to early learners.
Number sense is the ability to be flexible with numbers and to do mental math. I have taken the course "Number Sense 101" with Christina Tondevold and I am currently working on a group book study using "Number Talks" by Sherry Perrish. Through these learning opportunities, I have developed a great deal of knowledge of what kind of exposure and experiences students need in order to "catch" number sense.
I would really love to add the materials that I've requested to my classroom. The ETA Math Fluency Kit will be used as part of our number talks routine. Number talks are the time when students are presented with a math problem and we discuss different ways to solve the problem. The games, Tenzi and Shut the Box, are not only fun and engaging, but they also require students to think mathematically and strategically. These materials will be used by the students to support their growth in number sense knowledge.
