My Students
I am an ELL teacher in a poverty-stricken city. My students are refugees and asylum seekers from war-torn countries and have come here for a better life.
The children are five and six years old and melt my heart on a daily basis.
They come to school eager to learn to read like the "big kids." They love learning! They are full of life and love everything we do. Any help you can give us in our learning adventure we'd greatly appreciate.
My Project
My little ones are learning that vowels make two sounds, and that words are spelled differently depending on the sound the vowel makes. This can be a difficult concept to understand, so practicing building short and long vowel words using big, magnetic letters will help to make it more concrete.
Students need to physically manipulate the letters in a word themselves to help them learn and remember.
These short and long vowel sets will help them do just that. We also need small whisper phones so we can practice reading these words in our small space without interrupting our neighbors.
