This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year my 5th and 6th grade math students are trying something new! Each day students complete math tasks on vertical whiteboards on the walls of my classroom. This method encourages students to collaborate and think through problems in a new way. No longer are they sitting passively in their seats waiting for me to solve problems for them. They are learning how to think critically even when it's tough and that mistakes are expected, respected, and corrected in our classroom.

Currently, our classroom still needs one more large whiteboard space to accommodate all students.

Up to this point, we are using whiteboard sheets that only last a couple of days, have to be frequently replaced, and don't work as well as a wall-mounted whiteboard.

Our students are working so hard at solving math tasks and problems that we are blasting through our limited supply of whiteboard markers. You wouldn't believe how much these students are writing and solving each day! We also need small whiteboard erasers, because we know how important it is to try and retry at a given task. It's ok to write something and then decide to go a different direction with the thinking or problem-solving task.

My students are motivated to learn and at times don't want to leave the room until the problem is solved! Even students who don't traditionally see themselves as strong in math are showing they can lead others to learn!
