Mrs. Gutchigian's Literacy Lovers

My students need Scholastic News to be exposed to non fiction text. In addition, they need and deserve the chance to read and learn about the world around them.

My Students

As a reading specialist, each year one of my goals is to have my students 'fall in love with reading". As a 5th grade teacher, I teach literacy to both 5th grade classes.

I have been a teacher at Ellwood for nearly 20 years.

I have taught thousands of students both as a classroom teacher and as a reading specialist. The students at Ellwood, although economically disadvantaged, continue to have a passion for learning. They love being a part of a team, and love learning about the world they live in. They all have big dreams and high hopes for their futures. Although they face many challenges, their safe haven is coming to school each and every day.

My Project

By having the subscriptions to Scholastic News, my students will be able to learn about the world they live in. They will be able to read and learn about current events, and engage in discussions that relate to the core curriculum. Due to the catastrophic state of the school district's finances, we are unable to purchase consumable materials or workbooks for our students. This magazine would provide my students with the opportunity to use this resource as a learning tool in literacy, science, and social studies. Along with the text, scholastic provides on line resources which allows for differentiation and helps meet the different learning styles in my classes. In addition to the academic features, Scholastic provides articles that lend themselves to discussions about moral and ethical issues. The magazine would also be something they own and keep!

As a result of having these magazines, my students will have a greater appreciation for the world they live in.

They will learn about modern day heroes, and they will have a greater understanding of science concepts. (We currently do not have any science materials at all.) While using these magazines, my students will be able to learn and strengthen skills in reading, writing, vocabulary and critical thinking.
