My Project

Hello, and thank you for checking out our project! We live in a small town with a high prevalence of low income and food insecure families. As part of our 4th grade science standards for plant structures and life cycles, we start seedlings for students to grow in class and take home.

But this year I felt inspired to teach my students to take their gardening further and empower them with the full set of skills to help their families grow fresh, healthy food at home.

Our town has a community garden adjacent to our school parking lot. All of the food grown there each year is donated directly to our local food bank. However the garden has not been directly affiliated with our elementary school before and is a huge educational opportunity literally at our doorstep! Our plan this year is to work with the master gardener who operates the garden almost entirely on her own and purchases the plant starts each year. We will grow and donate all of the seedlings she needs and then volunteer directly in the garden through the Spring and Summer to transplant, water, weed, and eventually harvest from our plants.

Our 4th grade students will be teaming up with our 1st grade classes for this project, so in addition to the science and gardening skills they will gain, they will learn teamwork skills for working together and with younger students. They'll also apply math concepts like fractions and geometry to plan the layouts in the beds and will experience the value and gratification of community service.

We are seeking a shelving unit, light set, and seed trays for starting our warmer weather seedlings indoors this Spring, and hand tools for the kids to use in the garden.
