Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
According to the U.S. Department of Education, too few students enter the STEM fields. This is not surprising information to the teachers at my school. Science lessons often have to be skipped in order to help our students with their basic reading skills.
The majority of my students come from immigrant families and do not speak English as their first language.
Most of my students have never been to a museum or regularly visit a doctor. Their understanding of their own bodies is limited.
That is now changing since "Mr. Bones' Bone of the Week" has been introduced in the library. My small desk model of the human skeleton has become the most popular area in the library!
My Project
My current small desktop skeleton has been such a magnet for the students who see my desk on a weekly basis, I am confident that a life-size skeleton in the entry way of the library will be even more popular. Currently, due to the placement of my desk, only older students get a chance to see my desktop skeleton. Having a life-size human skeleton in the entry area of the library will allow all students the opportunity to identify and manipulate the different bones in our body.
Mr. Bones will serve as both a learning tool and a library mascot.
Every week I will introduce a new "Bone of the Week" by labeling the bone(s) with arrow stickers and writing out the bone and interesting facts related to that bone on the floor sign stand. I will then have my classes identify this bone on their own bodies and I will talk about why it is an important part of our body. In addition, I will use Mr. Bones as a tool to help the youngest students follow the story-time rules (you should have your hands to yourself like Mr. Bones).
To transform Mr. Bones into the library mascot, he will be given a hat that coincides with my seasonal décor. I will also create an area of the library to display "Mr. Bones' Weekly Book Picks".
Mr. Bones will be a wonderful and engaging way to bring more awareness of the human body to my students. I know Mr. Bones will positively impact the library and the students that walk through the library doors every day. He will help them develop a greater love of Science and Reading and welcome them into a new avenue of education where Science and Reading walk hand in bony hand!
