What I love most about my students is their prosperity. My students live hard lives, the majority of them go home and have no one to care for them or help them with homework. When they show up to school, they do their best to put their home lives aside to focus on their education.
My students are special because they have gone through things at the age of 6 or 7, that an adult can't even imagine going through.
Some of my students have seen death, have never met their parents, or have never even been to a movie theater but with all of that put aside they are filled with love. My students are special because they have seen evil, and still strive to put good into this world. They support one another when they succeed or fail, they work together so we can have a fun and positive environment in our classroom. They dream without boundaries.
My Project
Flexible seating is a way for students to make education their own. I have students who are movers, and if they don't have movement throughout the day you can truly tell a difference.
I have a handful of students that are wired to constantly be in motion.
This may look like shaking a leg while sitting, not being able to sit still for long periods of time, or needing a constant task or job. Some students like this tend to get in trouble more often because if they aren't supplied with the movement that they truly need, their mind wanders and they try to fill that elsewhere.
Flexible seating is more than just mixing things up, it allows the students to identify who they are and what they need as learners. If flexible seating was around during my childhood, it may have given my brother a sliver of enjoyment while dealing with ADHD in a rigid classroom setting. My goal as a teacher is to allow and embrace my students' individuality, and flexible seating is one way I can do that.
