Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Twelve out of the eighteen students in my room are speakers of another language. The students struggle with learning to read and understanding math but they are eager and excited to learn. Many come from homes where very little English is spoken so parents are not able to help them. Many do not have books in their homes. My students all receive free lunches. My students love math but struggle to learn the addition, subtraction, 2-3 dimensional shapes, and making tens skills. Getting instant math hands-on magnetic centers allow for me to reach the skill and students are able to manipulate the math objects! This will reach a variety of different learning styles and domains in math! This will also increase students’ understanding and make learning complicated math skills fun and engaging!
My Project
If my students get their hands on these magnetic math learning boards they will be able to build and make simple to more advanced numbers. The students will be able to understand the concept of base tens which will increase their skills in place value. The teacher and students will use a variety of tools to help them to build strong mathematical skills. They will also be able to do hands-on addition and subtraction. They will increase in math skills as they challenge each other to build and make greater numbers within the game. They will be able to work independently or in small groups. They will beg to do math! They will be practicing skills to help them develop their math and understanding of grade level skills. It will strengthen their weaknesses and build a strong foundation of engaging mathematicians that will last a lifetime.
