Moving Into the Future with a 3D Printer

My students need a 3D printer that would allow them to develop programming and problem-solving skills as they create models of their STEM/science projects.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a classroom where students come to class early and often stay late, excited about learning every day. Our Project Potential classroom is such a place! Whether building solar car models or testing soap bubbles, my students are quick to ask "why" and then work together to find an answer!

These K-6 gifted students are focused on preparing for future success, keeping an eye toward college.

Attending this universal Title I school, many students have limited access to technology or Internet use at home. This means that access at school to digital tools is even more critical. While reading a science article on digital tools for the future, my 5th grade group asked to investigate getting a 3D printer for our classroom, something that could be shared by the 75 students who work in this classroom daily. However, they realized the need to maximize resources and wanted to make certain that a 3D printer could be used as a tool and not a toy. They wanted to find the best printer for the dollar. Over several weeks, students researched the uses, types, specs, reviews, etc.. They held daily collaborative "briefings" to share the results of their findings and to discuss the next steps in their search. They've honed their communication skills while becoming more savvy consumers.

My Project

Students would like to use the 3D printer to develop their programming abilities and build STEM skills. In their words, "we can create programs that are 3D models of our inventions, bringing our paper drawings to life. We can improve our communication skills when we work together to create programs. And it will improve our problem solving skills along the way." A 3D printer will also allow my students to make replicas of delicate/fragile items, like fossils or insects, allowing for closer, more thorough study. 3D models will also give students a broader perspective on how things work and engage them in skills and strategies needed for success in the 21st century workplace. Aware that printers need supplies to function, students have put together a plan to raise funds for printer supplies. Knowing that technology is rarely plug-and-play, students are looking forward to both the challenges and digital learning that this 3D printer will bring to our classroom.

As technology explodes exponentially, I strive to help my students develop the skills and strategies essential for success in a digital world.

The careers that many students will have tomorrow don't exist today, making it even more important that students learn "how to learn," developing communication, problem-solving, and collaborative skills and strategies. A student-researched and selected 3D printer for our classroom will motivate my students to take this learning to even higher levels.
