Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 8th grade math in a district where most students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 71% qualifying for free or reduced price lunch, 64% Hispanic, 17% African American and 31% of them are English learners.
My students are bright and curious girls and boys who because of their family and economic situation has been steadily falling behind in math curriculum.
A lot of them come to me as 8th graders while scoring on 3rd, 4th and 5th grade level in mathematics. That makes teaching and learning on level math very challenging. Despite that, my students still try as hard as they can to overcome their obstacles and be successful in class.
My Project
Our traditional math curriculum is being supplemented more and more with digital components. Those are great for teaching and learning as they can enhance students learning with a lot of opportunities for exploration, visual aids, and practice, but they also tie me more to my desk during instruction.
I believe teaching should not be done sitting at a desk away from your students.
I am used to constantly moving around my classroom, looking at students' work, checking in with them, and helping when needed. I cannot do that easily if I'm stuck at the front of the classroom because that's where my computer and projector are located.
Having a rolling workstation with a wireless keyboard and mouse, I can fully utilize the online elements of our curriculum while not compromising my proximity to students. That proximity is essential in a math class as many students suffer from math anxiety and need constant reinforcement and feedback from their teacher. They are more likely to try new skills on their own if a teacher is right next to them and they can easily check in with her.
My students would also benefit more directly from a wireless keyboard and mouse as they could be more engaged with the elements of the lesson being projected from the teacher's computer. It would be easy to pass around the wireless keyboard and/or mouse that's connected to the main computer and allow for students to actively interact with the display.
