Help me give my students flexible
seating so they can have the ability to thrive in a diverse classroom that meets their learning differences and needs.
I have seventy-five energetic, enthusiastic, diverse fourth graders. They have a variety of different learning abilities, needs, and economical backgrounds. In our district, fifty-two percent of our students come from some situation of poverty. No matter what our students' background and diversity is, students should feel comfortable, relaxed, and excited to be in school.
Our class is a place where students call their home.
Among my regular education students, I have students that qualify for ESL, and learning support services. I also mainstream behavior support students into my science and social studies classroom. The students who are in my classroom are engaged in a rigorous curriculum. My students are excited to learn, be challenged, to succeed, and to persevere.
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Wave seats, stools and yoga balls allow for students to have different seating choices. This allow students to be comfortable, which is an essential component in motivating them. If our learning environment meets all students learning needs and differences, we are able to create a classroom that is a home to our students.
When students are comfortable in their learning environment, they are more willing to be motivated, focus on not only the curricular lessons, but life lessons that students learn in school.
At the start of each class, they pick the seat that best fits their diverse learning styles and needs. Flexible seating would allow my students to have a diverse selection to pick their just right learning place from. I have seen how choice can positively affect my students' work and demeanor, and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
