Moving and Grooving: Flexible Seats for Flexible Minds

Help me give my students ways to engage their bodies while they engage their minds. Flexible seating for reading brings fun and comfort and helps build stamina. Bouncy bands help students focus and meets their need to move!

My Students

In first grade, students are growing and developing rapidly. We spend a lot of time exploring books and developing a love of reading! What could be better than relaxing with a story and escaping into a world of imagination? Maybe explore the inside of the human heart or discover the difference between frogs and toads?

Students in my classroom come from neighborhoods from all over Philadelphia and bring diverse gifts and needs.

We want to support them as they learn and grow and offer a love of learning that will last a lifetime!

My Project

How many times do we tell kids what they can't do? Wouldn't it be great to say: "Yes you can!" ? This is the idea behind providing flexible seating and sensory outlets like bouncy bands. We give students choice and allow them to decide what works best as learners.

Propped up with a book on a comfy seat, stretched out on the carpet, or happily kicking a silent bouncy band, we give kids the power to be their best selves.

Best of all, we honor students as individuals and empower them to make choices which help them succeed.

Comfy seats will be used primarily in reading, while bouncy bands will be used throughout the day and across subjects. It is amazing what a difference these seemingly small adjustments can make in both learning outcomes and self esteem.
