Movin' and Groovin': Our Tectonic Earth

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn how the geological world around and under them works by utilizing these materials and samples in lab activities that teach them real-life scientific concepts in tactile ways

My Students

My students are 9th graders this year. This is the first time in a year and a half they have been able to attend classes full-time, due to the pandemic. They have shown extraordinary resiliency and a desire to learn and grow. Their attendance and in-class participation have been consistent from day one, and they have loved the hands-on labs and activities they have been able to do this year.

I have the privilege to teach in a mainstream classroom that includes students with a variety of learning levels, ethnicities, and family backgrounds.

Our classroom structure is one in which students more often than not work together in small groups to complete activities and assignments. This has allowed students to get to know their classmates better, as well as learn how to work well with others.

My Project

Your donation will go towards the purchase of materials and samples students will use in multiple different lab activities. They will design and carry out experiments that allow them to gain an understanding of the interior structure of the Earth, heat/energy transfer processes, tectonic movements, and patterns that result on Earth's crust.

These materials will provide my students with a hands-on approach in learning about the interior structure of our Earth as well as how energy transfer processes inside the Earth affect and shape its exterior.

Students will model and simulate tectonic plate movements via hot spot modeling. This will allow students to calculate and visualize tectonic plate movement occurring on a global scale. Students will also use samples to calculate density, build models, and construct an understanding of Earth's internal structure.
