My Students

Technology in the classroom is a big push with educators. Unfortunately with budget shortfalls, many classrooms share limited resources. In our high school, we have one digital camcorder to share among the entire campus. Video production isn't a course offered, so I try to incorporate it in theatre.

Our campus is part of a small school in rural East Texas.

The theatre arts students are a mixture of ages and backgrounds. Most of them are taking theatre because it is one of three fine arts courses offered. A life on stage is not in their minds, but they all love one thing-technology. The love to create videos and use their creativity to make "movie magic."

My Project

A digital video camera for out theatre arts classroom will be such a huge boon for our students. Since there is only one camera for our campus teachers to share, it is often hard to schedule projects. The students will create several short videos including a project on plot structure called "Movies in Minutes." Also, we have other projects that we film: an anti-drug video, stop-motion animation project, and short plays.

To dissect a play, can be very tedious and sometimes boring.

So, for character studies, we paint t-shirts. For plot structure, we take popular movies and reduce them to 5 minutes or less. This shows the students the importance of plot and how easily a play or a movie can be broken down into the "bare bones" of plot. We did a similar project last year, and I still have students and parents requesting a viewing of the videos created. Most of the students say it is their favorite project.
