The students in my class are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They range in age from three to four. For many of my students, this is their first experience in a classroom setting. My students are working on a modified pre-school curriculum. They access the curriculum using the principles of ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) and sensory-integrated activities. Along with the curriculum, my students are working on developing their independence with daily routines such as toilet training, self-feeding, and asking for help.
Many of my students are non-verbal.
This means they have little to no functional language. During the school year, my students are developing their communication skills. We use a variety of methods such as picture exchange, sign language, and verbal communication. Over the school year, my students are working towards becoming independent learners.
Did you know by building strong muscles in our core, back, and legs that this leads to better academic endurance? The students in my class have a variety of both mental and physical delays. I am envisioning using this climbing space as a way to build core muscles, develop alternating stepping skills, and socialization between students. This area is great for working on gross motor skills by climbing, crawling, and sliding. We will also target turn taking and problem solving skills. As a teacher, I like to teach through play and create an environment that is both accessible and embraces learning.
