Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The scholars at my school are some of the most eager go-getters I have had the pleasure to work with. Students come from a diverse background: we have a high population of economically disadvantaged families, families who speak multiple languages, and military families. Going to work each day is a pleasure because the students, staff, and parents WANT to be there!
Our school leads the district in Common Core achievement, demonstrating growth year after year in student learning objectives.
In fact, our socially disadvantaged and English Learner populations are even outperforming their peers in many areas! This is greatly enhanced by our staff's commitment to the whole student, in which we focus on developing a child's emotional self as well. Our school focuses on school-wide positive behavioral strategies and thinking outside the box to promote student engagement.
I have the pleasure of teaching students with IEPs. My students have disabilities ranging from learning and processing disorders to autism to emotional disturbance. They are all integrated into the general population with academic, behavioral, and emotional supports.
My Project
Students with disabilities need alternative seating to the traditional desk and chair. The use of specialized stools, cushions, and bands allow students to get out their physical needs while learning. Research shows that allowing children the freedom to move during brainwork increases retention and attention.
Special Education budgets get cut further and further each year, just as more and more students are identified as needing alternative learning environments.
The use of these tools increase students' ability to remain in a general education setting because they are more successful with simple seating tools! Students themselves can even be taught to advocate for their own needs and request flexible seating tools to help them be more successful.
