Sitting still, keeping bodies in control, and sustaining focus and attention are areas that are very difficult for my students. All of my students want to succeed, but simple things like sitting in a chair for a long period of time make it very challenging for them.
In our small 480 student school, 45 of those students receive special education services.
One in ten students in our school is considered homeless. Many have experienced trauma but are still resilient and want to learn. Our neighborhood and community want to help our students but often are unable to due to their own financial needs. Our special education budget is small, and we have many needs that we need to address to best help our students succeed.
My Project
When my students have opportunities to move, they are more successful in the classroom. In the classrooms I work in, the few students who have access to bouncy bands and wiggle seats are more able to focus and participate in class.
With the use of movement tools, I am able to collaborate with our school's Occupational Therapist and Physical Therapist to make sure that all of our students are succeeding.
We need need a trampoline, wiggle seats, bouncy bands, and noise cancelling headphones. It is not possible for us to have whole class movement breaks multiple times throughout the day. Our students have only one 30-minute recess daily. Our classroom teachers try their best to make sure that students are up and moving, but there is only so much they can do when trying to meet all the required standards.
