My students are eager and enthusiastic, but spending 7 hours a day in a classroom without much – if any – activity takes its toll. Teaching math, there is also a larger anxiety level for many students. As the day goes on, I can see each student become restless. My students need stimulation and comfort my current classroom cannot provide. I cultivate classes where students can get out of their chairs and move around, using bean bags as well as stand-up tables, yet this is not enough.
There are many different cultures represented at my school, with 33 native languages spoken at home.
I have ELL (English Language Learners) and special education students integrated in all my core classes.
My Project
Every day, students in my class look to work in spaces that work best for them, which is usually not sitting in a traditional chair at a table. They want to be in a comfortable space where they can work collaboratively and move. Many of my students are more engaged in class when they are able to move. For some, this is tapping their feet, standing so they can move, or even playing with a fidget.
Hokki Stools are ergonomically designed for students to move while they are sitting down.
They will provide my students a flexible seating option that allows them to move and be active as well as work collaboratively in a space that works best for them in the classroom.
Being able to move while working will allow my students to be more engaged in what we are doing in class. This in particular will benefit my students with ADHD, ADD, autism, and anxiety as they tend to need to move more while in class. The addition of these stools in my classroom will provide the flexible seating that students are looking for as they learn to figure out what works best for their learning style. The stools will allow them to move in their seats, increasing engagement and reducing stress.
