Help me give my students the ability to have brain breaks and move their bodies in between their learning. The trampoline would benefit my students receiving OT services as well as the others for brain breaks. Movement heals!
My students are fun-loving, eager to learn, and sometimes silly which is a good thing because in our classroom we love to make learning FUN! I teach special education K-2 and my students have various disabilities and a large number of them require occupational therapy and a 1/2 of them require speech services as well. They are from diverse backgrounds. Some have 1 parent households and others have families with several other students at our school as well as the junior high. My groups have a lot of energy and the cutest smiles ever! They are very good at doing fun crafts, and art projects and all of them love coloring and that is a good thing because at Syracuse Arts Academy we are required to integrate arts into our learning. At the end of class we always have the students say, "I am amazing!" Each of my students say it with enthusiasm and me and my 2 para-professionals encourage growth mind-set. They truly are AMAZING!
My Project
The trampoline and hopscotch will help my students heal their hearts and minds. They will use the resources and jump on the trampoline between small group instruction subjects as well as for their specified sensory diets, and they get that input from the bouncy bands while we are giving instruction. Many of my students are very anxious because of family situations, COVID 19, and an overall uncertain world.
Our occupational therapist, myself and our school counselor agree that these kids need to move because of their unique challenges that they face on a daily basis!
If these items were in my room, they could get that stress release from the movement and be better prepared to learn during small-group instruction. When we see students being anxious during small-group instruction, we sometimes actually take them outside to play or hopscotch and they tend to calm down rather quickly. It would be such a blessing to just have these items, like chair bands and fidgets, right there in our room so they can get right to it, no matter the situation or the weather, and when they are done they can get right back to learning.
My special education students have more difficulties in school than non-disabled students and they need that feedback that only movement can give. They would benefit greatly with the opportunity to move between subjects and when they need a brain break. Movement is a quick way to release stress!
