Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Maya Angelou so eloquently explained the symbiotic relationship I have with my students when she said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
To be quite honest, I totally anticipated trying to make this type of an impact on my students but what I did NOT expect, was that they would touch me in this way.
I get the benefit of starting each day with excited hugs and stories of last night's video game escapades. As the day continues, my arms are lovingly stroked, albeit, like the family pet. "I love you's" never end and the stars in their eyes twinkle as they share with me something they've accomplished.
Our school is Title I so the majority of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and over 75% of my students are English language learners. Although my students are considered "disadvantaged" based on many factors in their home lives, they do not know what that means. All they know is the joy they get from learning a new skill and how they feel when they are loved. That is all that matters.
My Project
All of the resources chosen for my classroom will be utilized to create a self-contained Action Based Learning (ABL) Lab where my students will have additional opportunities to incorporate kinesthetic movements into their learning experiences.
Utilizing Action Based Learning, my students will have greater success in the classroom both academically and behaviorally.
Cross-curricular teaching styles have always proven most effective when educating students. However, recent trends have shown very strong correlations between learning, behavior, and movement. I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend an ABL training where we learned that exercise fuels neurogenesis - the creation of new brain cells. Armed with this vital information, it is my responsibility to provide the best possible learning environment to shape the minds of my students.
Due to the language barrier the majority of my students face, I would be able to use this equipment to integrate physical motion while reinforcing the academic concepts they so desperately need. We will get our bodies moving while reviewing things we have learned, such as letter names, letter sounds, sight words, number recognition, etc. However, this equipment isn't only beneficial for my ELL students, it is profoundly important for each and every individual student. The playground balls can be used to recite math facts or spell sight words while working on coordination and locomotor skills. They can practice their spatial awareness and cognition skills by balancing on a Spooner Board while reciting their letter sounds. All of the items I have chosen will serve my students academically and physically.
