This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is an Urban Cleveland School and represent a diverse mix of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school is growing by leaps and bounds every year and as we grow our music classroom has more students we see on a daily basis.
Our classroom is full of active music-making in all forms: playing instruments, singing, composing, listening, dancing, and everything in between.
The music room is one of the safe places these students have to explore their different music and artistic talents and we would like to continue the growth of our program.
My Project
We are a relatively young band program and we want to keep our eye on becoming the best. When our program started 5 years ago we started by using instruments that were being unused at other schools but were between 20-40 years old. Through lots of time and effort we have kept these instruments in good working order but many of our mouthpieces have chips or teeth grooves on top from years of playing. This wear and tear on mouthpieces can cause the player to squeak and sometimes not allow them to make a sound at all.
We are desperately in need of mouthpieces, ligatures, and cleaning swabs to keep playing, improve our sound, and motivate us to continue to work hard.
Being a title one school, it is up to me and our budget to supply the equipment for my students. These mouthpieces, ligatures, and cleaning swabs would be used right away by students who are working hard to improve and represent our new school in performance. Being able to mature our musician's sound is key to be able to recruit more players and to motivate our current students to improve and work even harder.
