Motivating Struggling Readers with High Interest Graphics

My students need high interest low reading level books with pictures (i.e. graphics) to help them bridge the gap between text and comprehension.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Gaw's classroom raised $502

My Students

Our library/school serves hearing impaired children who read well below their grade level. Our middle and high school students need materials that interest them on a low reading level. They want to be seen reading books that are appropriate for older readers, not picture books.

Since the majority of our sensory impaired students read well below their grade level, they need multiple opportunities to practice their reading skills.

Our middle and high school students generally read on a 2nd to 4th grade level. They do not want to be seen reading picture books. However, this is the material that most closely aligns with their reading levels. Our library would like to purchase a variety of high interest/low reading level (hi-lo) graphic novels that would motivate these reluctant readers to read. These graphic novels would focus on topics that are suitable for middle and high school aged readers while controlling vocabulary and reading levels. The graphic novels would provide visual cues that would aide the student in comprehending the text in the story. At this time, 75% of our checkouts to older students are picture books. We want to provide them with a collection of motivating, meaningful, interesting reading materials.

My Project

Our deaf students' first language is American Sign Language. Due to their hearing impairments, many students begin school with limited communication skills. They are trying to decode (i.e. read) a language that they have not mastered while simultaneously working on their communication skills. These students live in a visual world and communicate through a visual language. We need graphic novels to provide them with a pictorial bridge to aid in the decoding of text.

Our older deaf students are not motivated to read picture books.

Many of them struggle to comprehend the text in picture books. They want to be seen reading appropriate material for their age group. Graphic novels would allow them to read age appropriate material that they can comprehend.
