Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a school with about 90% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. My students come from low social economic status and hard living/family situations. In addition over half of my class are ESL students that are working very hard to learn English as a second language.

I teach second grade at an inner city school with students that have daily struggles in their life. Those struggles include homelessness, lack of food, living without a mom or dad, parents with no jobs, and illiterate guardians. I push my students to read daily and despite my students being in second grade I am still teaching many of them to read and really understand what they read. This gets particularly hard when many of them do not fully understand English words or how to pronounce them and when they go home at night they do not have anyone to read with that can help them properly decode words and understand what it is that they are reading.

This project will benefit my students tremendously by allowing students to listen and create recordings of leveled readers, poems, and reader's theater performances. They'll be able to go to the listening centers to listen to modeled reading of books with correct pronunciation, fluency, and expression. Using voice recordings of the books my students will be able to read it many times and then take the book to try it on their own. They'll be able to video and/or voice record their own reading to model reading fluency for their peers, to self monitor their own fluency, and playback previous recordings to see fluency growth. Students will be able to perform and tape reader's theaters in small groups to show reading & performing skills to other students, parents, and the school thus validating their reading achievements. The Ipod Nano technology will also help my students with reading comprehension as some students are more successful with listening comprehension, therefore they can record themselves reading, and listen to their recording to work on truly understanding what they're reading. I will be able to serve my students for years to come with these valuable resources.

You will make it possible for my students to have the motivation, confidence, and fluency to continue to read and succeed throughout their lives. It is paramount that each of my students learn to read and read with confidence and with your help we can make it happen with improved technological reading resources.
