Motivating Magazines to Engage Reluctant Readers

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Our focus is to produce future leaders who will move their community forward in a positive way.

My goal is to make sure that my students take pride in what they do and enjoy our learning community.

I work with some of the most enthusiastic and caring kids around. My students come with various social and academic needs. Many of them enter 1st grade reading and writing below grade level. Differentiating their learning is key to their success.

My Project

A subscription to Scholastic News Magazine will help keep my kiddos interested and engaged in nonfiction reading. The magazines cover many science and social studies topics that 1st grade students can relate to. Scholastic News provides the necessary skills to help students navigate nonfiction text in an interesting way.

Students need more exposure to nonfiction texts!

The subscription includes an online component with videos and interactive games for additional learning fun. Students get excited as each new issue arrives and they are introduced to the weekly science or social studies topic. Each issue focuses on new vocabulary and nonfiction text reading skills.
