My Students

Motivation - that is the key to teaching. I teach five year olds. When five year olds enter a classroom, no matter what their ethnic background, they are ready for adventure and exploration. I provide them with the adventure of learning to read. And they are willing participants in this program.

I teach in an area of great diversity, which I believe is our strength.

We have a large percentage of Native American students as well as Hispanic, Eastern Indian, and Anglo children attending our school. We also have children in our school from a wide economic range. Of greatest concern are those on the edge of homelessness. It is these children that I feel reading can impact the most. Regardless of ethnic or economic status there is an inner need to explore and learn in children. I see this everyday in the classroom. Seeing them excited about becoming readers is one of the great rewards of teaching.

My Project

I'm requesting digital audio players to support a program that I have used very successfully for 13 years. In the past we have used cassette players and of late the recording capabilities in our old IMac's. Both have their limitations. Then I discovered these inexpensive digital audio players. Here is how my program runs: - Students follow along in a big book as they use the audio player to listen to and track the words of the story three times. - After completing the third reading, the student removes vocabulary cards stored in a bag at the back of the book. - If the student can read the card it is set aside. - If the student cannot read the card, he finds the word within the story. - Usually with the familiarity of the text and the picture cues the student can figure out the word. - After studying all cards the student brings the cards to the teacher to be checked. - When they are able to read all of the cards fluently they move on to another book.

Funding of this project will enhance an existing highly successful program.

Having 10 audio players will allow more children to participate in this independent reading activity in less time. And in the classroom time is essential. It is a wonderful thing to be witness to students entering the classroom with a sense of adventure and exploration and leave the classroom as readers motivated to learn about their environment. Audio players will help achieve this.
