My students need objects to be in their "morning tubs" for when they enter the classroom. The Magna-Tiles are a great start to different activities for students to use before our morning meeting.
I teach in a small rural school district in Iowa. We recently have had to make major budget cuts to help with the lack of funding we are receiving. We have a high level of Free and Reduced Lunch students in our district.
When students enter OUR classroom I want them to feel comfortable, safe, and excited to learn.
Everyday I try my best to make a connection with every student about what is happening with them outside of school. We all know how busy our lives can be at home and how often the children suffer due to factors in their home life.
My Project
In the morning before we start our morning meeting students will be given the opportunity to start using "morning tubs". These tubs will be filled with different educational activities for students. Half of the activities are literacy based and the other half are math.
When students come in they will get to work with their table mates to discover their "morning tub" and work as a group.
During this time I'm excited to hear students having conversations that make all students active participants.
I plan to model to the students how to use social skills while working in their table groups. The idea is that this type of play will set the foundation for later interactions in our classroom and for the students in the real world.
