My students are smart, creative, and inquisitive 2nd graders. They live and thrive in an area of high poverty. The classroom is an English as a New Language (ENL) full immersion classroom. Half of the class are native English speakers, while the other half is ENL.
For many of the students, this is their first experience going to school in a formal capacity.
This means many times students are unprepared for what to expect. My students are curious and ask why or how many times a day. The students desire to research and find answers to their questions. They prefer to find the answer on their own instead of being told the answer.
My Project
My students trickle in each morning. Students have 20 minutes to eat breakfast and prepare for the day. During this 20 minute time, students need STEM bins to help them get their mind moving. The different forms of blocks allow the students to mix and match materials while building. The puzzle shape blocks will allow students to create puzzles using their own pictures. The bins will help with storage, but will also allow me to break the larger sets into smaller sets for more students to gain access to STEM materials. The shelving will allow me to keep the bins in reach of the students and not locked in the cabinets.
With the materials purchased students will be able to build, experiment, and create before class officially starts.
Students will be able to work in groups or independently with the materials. Students will also be allowed to use the bins when they finish their work.
