Morning Meeting

My Students

What's today? What month is it? How many days have we been in school? When is break? These are questions I hear nearly every day! Students in first grade are just beginning to learn concepts of time and learning to utilize a calendar.

I teach a 1st grade class of 24 awesome children in a low-income high-need school.

My class is made up of a diverse group of children ready to learn. My class has a wide range of academic skills: from children with little background knowledge due to limited experiences to gifted and talented students who are working 1-2 grades above level! I have children that come to school without any school supplies or lunch money; 67% of my school is on the free or reduced lunch program.

My Project

Teaching calendar skills such as days of the week, months of the year, and writing the date are so important at the beginning of first grade. We learn songs, say chants, and do many of these skills together in a meeting format. I would like to add a few aspects to my calendar meeting and transform it into a new type of meeting: the morning meeting! During calendar we already address a few math skills like time and money. I want to start using a morning message to help bring in reading and language arts skills. Integration is key in today's education world because of increasing standards and limited time.

In order to get my morning meeting up and running, my students need a binder that is sturdy enough to last them all year and can be carried to and from the carpet for our meeting.

They need dividers to easily find the section we will be working on during our meeting. I also need new supplies to conduct the meeting. I get a very small amount of money at the beginning of the year to purchase everything for the year and it just doesn't cover enough. Your generous donation will help us immensely!
