My Students
My students are on the cusp of big adventure, high school. As freshmen they are excited and unsure, energetic and timid. They are still working out who they are, what they believe in, and what they value. Our classroom is a great place to begin exploring.
In this class, we strive to empower students to find their voice and share it with the world.
They do this by reading about diverse perspectives, writing about unique experiences and sharing new ideas.
My Project
These books will help build our classroom library. We want students to be strong readers and lovers of stories. One way to foster this love is to have a reading focused classroom where we read, write about our reading, talk about our reading and share our reading daily. To do this students need to have a diverse selection of books right at their fingertips. These books are relevant and interesting for adolescents, but also challenging both academically and in the ideas and perspectives they represent.
Young people need more than a single story.
A single story reinforces stereotypes, but exposing young people to many stories helps them navigate the world. More than a single story helps students develop empathy for others, recognize and discuss their own emotions and the emotions of others, and learn how to behave in society. It is important that young people have access to great stories.
