These books will help build our classroom library. We want students to be strong readers and lovers of stories. One way to foster this love is to have a reading focused classroom where we read, write about our reading, talk about our reading and share our reading daily. To do this students need to have a diverse selection of books right at their fingertips. These books are relevant and interesting for adolescents, but also challenging both academically and in the ideas and perspectives they represent. Young people need more than a single story. A single story reinforces stereotypes, but exposing young people to many stories helps them navigate the world. More than a single story helps students develop empathy for others, recognize and discuss their own emotions and the emotions of others, and learn how to behave in society. It is important that young people have access to great stories.
