Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are phenomenal. We have a very average mix of ability levels, but what stands out about our kids is their determination and grit. This tight-knit group of kids is also extremely compassionate and generous. They worked hard last year organizing several supply drives and doing volunteer work to benefit their community.
They are inquisitive go-getters who are eager to be successful in life, despite any personal hardships they may have had to overcome.
Our school population is almost 70% economically disadvantaged, and 67% percent are Hispanic. Although our area is technically a suburb of Houston, much of our district is still very rural, and many of our students live in mobile homes and in flood-prone areas. Our school is a unique program in the district and is still pretty new. The students take college classes while still in high school and are able to graduate at the end of four years with an Associate's degree. We have an extremely limited budget that provides for most basic supplies that we need; however, we frequently don't have money for enrichment supplies that really help connect the students with the concepts we teach.
My Project
One thing you can never have enough in classrooms is power outlets! We work hard to utilize online learning and take advantage of the students having laptops, but keeping them charged can be tricky.
Our students use laptop computers in all their classes, so it's important that we keep their devices powered up!
Their devices don't always come to school fully charged to begin with, but using them all day also drains the battery. Since the (few) outlets we do have in the classroom are really far away from student desks, just plugging computers in to charge can be difficult. I'd like to purchase two power strips with long cords and cord covers (for safety) so they can keep their devices up and running no matter where they are working!
Last year was tough with Hurricane Harvey and a lot of change, so we're doing everything we can to make our school the best learning environment possible!
