My Project

Teaching tiny humans is one of the most rewarding careers. Because they're exactly that, tiny humans, they spend a large part of their school day learning together on the floor in front of our interactive smart board. Whether we're exploring a new math concept, conducting a science investigation, discussing our community during social studies, or enjoying a read-aloud, our whole-group meeting area is where some of our most meaningful learning and conversations take place.

With class sizes ranging from 26 to 28 first graders, having a meeting space that comfortably fits every student is essential.

First graders learn best when they have their own designated learning space. Assigned spots help students stay focused, minimize distractions, encourage responsibility, and allow us to transition quickly into lessons.

My current seating system relies on Velcro dots to provide those designated spaces. While this worked for a time, it no longer meets the needs of our classroom. As students have grown, the spacing between the dots has become too tight, and years of daily use have left many of them worn and permanently marked by dry-erase markers.

The classroom rug I selected offers a lasting solution. The larger size will comfortably accommodate every student (even if we grow to 30 students) while providing clearly defined seating. I intentionally chose a durable, primarily black rug that will better withstand the everyday wear and tear of a busy first-grade classroom.

This rug will become the heart of our classroom—a place where mathematicians solve problems together, scientists make observations, and every child has a place to belong. Thank you for helping my first graders have more room to gather, learn, and grow... with a little more on the floor!
