This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Each day I am greeted by 22 smiling faces who constantly remind me why I became a teacher. Simply put, I became a teacher because I wanted to positively impact the lives of children!
I feel so blessed to work with fun loving children who come to school eager to learn and excited by what the day holds for them.
Although 73% percent of our children qualify for free or reduced lunch, I love the magic of first grade because all of the children, regardless of gender, race, and socio-economic status, see themselves as authors, mathematicians, teachers, learners, and scientists. With each new skill and milestone, they are developing increasing confidence. One visit to our room and you will find children replacing, "I can't" with "If I work at it, I can!"
My Project
I love teaching first grade because you have an opportunity to watch children grow as readers and writers throughout the year. There is nothing more rewarding than watching the excitement on a child's face when they read a book independently for the very first time. This year, our school is using the Lucy Calkins Reading Units. This curriculum has armed my students with the tools they need to live literate lives. They are reading books throughout the day and devouring them faster than I can find them.
As we learn more about our world by studying nonfiction text, it has become increasingly evident to me that in order to meet the diverse needs of my students, I must increase the number of non-fiction books in my leveled library.
I want my children to be exposed to books that interest them yet allow them to feel successful as readers. This leveled library set and seat storage would provide them with more opportunities to read high interest books independently and personal storage space for safe keeping and easy access.
