I love teaching first grade because you have an opportunity to watch children grow as readers and writers throughout the year. There is nothing more rewarding than watching the excitement on a child's face when they read a book independently for the very first time. This year, our school is using the Lucy Calkins Reading Units. This curriculum has armed my students with the tools they need to live literate lives. They are reading books throughout the day and devouring them faster than I can find them. As we learn more about our world by studying nonfiction text, it has become increasingly evident to me that in order to meet the diverse needs of my students, I must increase the number of non-fiction books in my leveled library. I want my children to be exposed to books that interest them yet allow them to feel successful as readers. This leveled library set and seat storage would provide them with more opportunities to read high interest books independently and personal storage space for safe keeping and easy access.
