This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love watching my students fall in love with a book for the first time. Putting that 'just right' book into a student's hands takes a classroom filled with a variety of books to engage every type of reader. It is so important to have a diverse selection of books with protagonists that reflect the many cultural traditions that our students come from. My goal for this project is to add new titles and the latest series books by our favorite authors to our classroom library. These independent reading books are the foundation of our independent reading program: students read their "just right" book for a half hour each day, study vocabulary, learn grammar and the conventions of English, engage in thoughtful discussions to develop social emotional learning, and write responses that improve their critical thinking. Please help us continue to provide exciting and interesting titles to our students.

Our school is a unique school for inner-city gifted and talented students.

We follow the Schoolwide Enrichment Model for Reading developed by Dr. Reis at the University of Connecticut. Our students are challenged to read high-quality fiction and nonfiction titles of their choice. Last year, we were the only public school in Hartford, CT, to achieve Tier 1 status, and I believe it is because of our unique learning program.
