My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Many of them do not have their basic needs met on a daily basis. They are also very far behind when it comes to literacy rates. About 70% of my upcoming 5rd grade students are not reading on grade level. They do not receive much support from home because their parents are not interested in their education. However, despite all of their setbacks, they have such a drive to be better and do better. They are excited about learning new things. Their passion inspires me.
My Project
Our class sizes has increased tremendously this year because our school is continuing to grow. I will be teaching a self-contained 5th grade class of at least 28 students. We simply do not have enough materials to perform day to day tasks. We need space for each student to put their materials and their weekly folder. We also need more clipboards for our classroom. We are asking for 6 more clipboards to help complete our class set. We have also asked for some new books to help build our 5th grade library. I am coming from a 3rd grade classroom. We need new books that help teach 5th grade standards more effectively. The books we have asked for will be used for week long lessons and interactive read aloud. They are cultural books that bring new perspectives to our students. These books are essential to our reading lessons. These are books that will be interesting and engaging for each child.
Students deserve to have every supply and book they need to be successful in the classroom.
If this project is funded each student will have his or her own space in the classroom to organizer their things and feel at home.
