My Students
I teach a diverse group of fourth grade students in Indianapolis, IN. I have just returned to in-person learning and so have several of my students. We are working on building a new classroom community, which I thought would be a big challenge late in the year. However, these students are excited to be back and are quickly connecting with one another and with me. They are wonderful people to work and grow with, and I am very motivated to provide them the best education I possibly can.
My Project
One of the ways my students and I have been connecting is through our shared love of graphic novels and manga. While learning online, a group of students started an anime club after school to discuss their favorite books and shows. This shared interest has carried over into our in-person room and students are eager to read new books that their friends have suggested.
Unfortunately, my classroom library is very light on manga and graphic novels that students want to read.
I would like to capitalize on my students' eagerness to read by providing them appropriate, high-interest texts in their favorite genres.
I am excited to bring students to the library and hand them a book that was donated with them in mind. One of my favorite parts of being a teacher is connecting students with a book that perfectly captures what they are looking for and that they can't put down. I am already imagining a room of students engaged in reading and sharing these texts during independent reading. These books will also have the added bonus of helping connect this new group since so many of my students will be interested in reading them.
