Most of my students come from low-income households and have a very hard time succeeding in school. Over forty percent of our school qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. Our school district does not have enough funds to give teachers the resources to teach every student and we are considered to be a Title I school district. Teachers have to rely on handouts or use their own money to gather the tools they need to be effective in the classroom.
Students need new and exciting ways of being taught and teachers need the supplies to teach them.
Many students speak English as a second language and would benefit from more resources in the classroom. In science, the content can be difficult for them to understand due to the language barrier. They typically give up instead of putting in more effort. As their teacher, I am looking for new and exciting ways to help these students to stay in school and help them learn with less anxiety.
My Project
Back in October, my class had a Glofish project funded but since then a bunch of our fish tank equipment broke and many of the Glofish and goldfish died. We have 6 Glofish left and have recently replaced all the broken equipment to help the few survivors.
My students are looking to get a few more fish and a new fish tank to help their Glofish thrive.
We have used the fish for two labs, one on genetics and the other on responding to different lights, but my students really enjoy looking at them and helping me take care of them. They were heartbroken seeing so many fish pass away.
In addition to the 6 Glofish, my student would like to add a few goldfish to our large fish tank since we only have 4 in a 40-gallon tank. They have also asked for more test strips to keep a close eye on the water quality.
