Help me give my students copies of The Joy Luck Club to add diversity to our English curriculum.

My Students
My students are gifted and high achieving 9th graders who will be taking English 1 for high school credit. They have done distance learning since March 13, and I am not sure if they will be returning full-time in a few months. In March, we were unprepared - but I am trying to ensure that I will have materials for them if we are not back in the classroom fulltime.
My Project
My state has developed units that we are expected to follow for our English 1 curriculum. These units are all centered around a novel - which serves as an anchor text. All of the novels selected have been "classical literature titles" - by "dead white authors". Luckily, our state has updated the units this summer - adding more diverse options at every level. I am eager to add these new units into my classroom because my students are diverse, and they deserve to see themselves (and see people who are not like themselves) represented in the literature that we read.
Although I know that adding this new text to my English 1 curriculum will be beneficial to all of my students, I also know that Covid-19 has created some budget cuts, making a new set of novels a luxury that we probably cannot afford right now.
Please help me diversify my curriculum by teaching one of the new units to my students in the fall. Regardless of if they are back in my classroom, learning from home, or some hybrid of that - I know that this unit will be engaging and enlightening. This book will serve as an anchor text - coupled with poetry, short stories, nonfiction essays and passages, and works of art - to explore how perceptions of others influence identity.
