Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my rural school are diverse. Over half of our students are of Latin heritage; their parents and grandparents came to this country to improve their quality of life, and they believe our school can give their children the opportunity to succeed.
Unfortunately, many students in my school live in poverty.
School is a safe place for them, and we want to make sure that they have options to break that cycle of poverty. Many of the students who graduate are the first in their family to do so. For many, the idea of college or technical school was never even considered until their teachers believed in them and helped them find ways to get there.
My Project
My students need to read young adult literature that focuses their attention on problems young adults face in other parts of the world, not just in their own community. Some of our students are immigrants or first-generation American citizens and they have heard stories about growing up in other places. Other students have little experience with a life other than their own.
Reading diverse literature gives students practice at being more empathetic human beings.
People who read literary fiction about cultures different than their own learn to sympathize with the plights of others. In a country where we become more divided than ever, this is one way to teach students to learn to listen to others' stories and not to judge.
