My school is a Waldorf method public charter in northern California. We are an arts-based curriculum and put a great emphasis on students having many different learning experiences and opportunities. We serve an economically and culturally diverse community and we impart an appreciation for different cultures through a comprehensive curriculum.
Every student should have the gift of music in their life!
Our students sing in all grades and all students learn the recorder and violin. Our middle school students all have instrumental music class and they have the option to select either orchestra or band.
The band is a newer program at our school. Interest and support for the program are very high, but resources are not. We have hobbled along these first 2 years with a small amount of donated percussion but the time has come to give that section a much-needed boost.
My Project
We are a fledgling, but enthusiastic, middle school band program. Our program includes a beginning and intermediate band and the program serves over 70 students. Students have an opportunity to learn a brass or woodwind instrument or to learn a variety of instruments as a member of the percussion section. Students who select this section to learn snare and bass drum, bells and a variety of auxiliary instruments such as cymbals and tambourine. Percussion is the heartbeat of the band and my percussion students have been doing an amazing job with pieced together donations and borrowed gear. It’s time to step up their game and give them the ability to play more technical and varied music. Help the beat go on!
