My Students

I teach in a rural school district, where many students will tell you they would rather be out on their family farms than reading a book. Although we run into a lot of resistance to reading in the classroom, the school atmosphere is very positive.

Our students tend to be respectful and willing to be engaged in the classroom.

And they are lots of fun! I often leave at the end of the day encouraged by the ways students have responded to me and the learning challenges they have faced that day. School pride is important to my students, and in hard times they support each other across social divides.

My Project

The students at my school range from eager book omnivores to real skeptics. A significant teaching goal each semester is that every student finds him- or herself engrossed in a book, finally convinced that reading is worth their time,

Because the books in my classroom are constantly being rotated and checked out, they get worn quickly.

Worse, my reluctant readers are often looking for a specific genre - and if they don't find it, they don't want to read.

The books on this project list appeal to a variety of student personalities. Even the most hesitant student reader should be able to find an appealing title in my classroom! These books will greatly help to expand my library.
