Kindergarten is so much fun. Our students learn in many different ways using all of our senses and multiple intelligences. We use a wide range of techniques to help all the students succeed no matter what their level. Our students attend a Title I school. Most of the students come from families from a low socioeconomic status, with over 70% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in our state. Our school is a caring community of successful learners, which can be seen through collaborative student project based learning in and out of the classroom. Kindergarteners in our classes love to work with hands-on materials and have many different opportunities to practice a skill before it is mastered.
My Project
Most of the books in my classroom library currently were passed down to me. Many are old, on an inappropriate grade level, low-quality, and they are not very diverse.
My classroom is full of unique students from different walks of life, and it is important for them to be adequately represented in the stories we read in our classroom.
This is why I am asking for books that include characters of varying races, cultures, family structures, and economic statuses. I also am in need of stories that teach important lessons like courage, kindness, and embracing differences.
I want my students to feel engaged and truly connected to the stories in our classroom so they can develop a deep and long-lasting love for reading.
