My scholars are terrific and love to learn! Students embrace diversity. Many students are learning English as their second or third language; our school was the first in our district to start an ELL program, in 1945. The school lost about 45 percent of its student body when Japanese Americans were interned during World War II. At present, our school population includes Black, African, Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, and white students. Our school's vision states: "We honor and cultivate each child’s individual gifts and talents while developing academic excellence and social-emotional strength. We empower children to contribute positively to our diverse and dynamic society through lifelong learning and personal integrity."
About 30% of our scholars experience housing instability or homelessness.
With your support, students will use new tools to fill their minds, hearts, and imaginations with learning, wonder, and joy.
Did you know one of the most important predictors of graduating from high school is reading proficiently by the end of third grade? I serve as an academic intervention specialist for primary literacy. My goal is to bring children's reading levels up to or above grade level.
This project will provide at-home learning materials for a student who has not yet met foundational skills standards at their grade level. In addition, this project includes some fun books with comic book-type format so the scholar can foster their love of reading.
These materials will be mailed to a student who has been working very hard on foundational reading skills, including blending.
The materials include books appropriate to the scholar's "zone of proximal development," with just the right amount of challenge as per their data. The books can be used independently by the scholar or with relatives.
