More Beautiful Possibilities Created through Reading!
My students need books-books on tape, big books, award winning books and books in various genres. They need to see themselves positively reflected in literature.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love books! On their own, with a buddy, and in groups, they pretty much read everything they could find last year. One of my personal priorities this year in creating a foundation of literacy is building up our classroom library, especially in the genres of fiction and poetry.
This school, a new public charter is bringing a quality Montessori education to this economically and culturally diverse community.
As a public charter without the benefit of private school funding sources, this school is striving to provide an excellent education to it’s students and set a beautiful example of what learning can be to it's local community. It is succeeding in this mission. Again, due to the budget issue in our state, this year our budget has been cut in half for purchasing school supplies and learning materials. My class is a fantastic group of eager, deserving, hardworking 1st through 3rd grade children, some of whom have special learning needs and requirements, all of whom love to learn! With three grade levels in one class, there is a wide range of learning styles, reading levels, and writing skills, and a passionate commitment on the part of their teacher that everyone of these students becomes a fluent reader.
My Project
To help meet the needs of my diverse and multi-aged group, I am requesting materials that will allow our students to participate in various reading opportunities. Children have different ways of learning, some that are supported by reading together, some by reading independently, and all by being read to. This project will create: shared reading experiences which we will read together as a class and will be used for learning new vocabulary and writing skills, books on tape to help my students develop stronger listening comprehension skills, and a set of King Series books for guided reading "literacy group" experiences. The children will be learning how to discuss books as a group and will use them in creation of a performance for our African American Celebration. This is an amazing school. As a public charter, the funding is limited but the commitment and heart is not. Without a doubt, these resources will help create a rich and varied approach to literacy development in our classroom.
This project is really about inspiration-children will want to read if they connect to what they are reading.
The variety of books here, the poetry, the multicultural books, the books on tape, the King Series and many of the other books will spark my young readers. I did a paper in college and it was my assertion that children benefit tremendously from seeing themselves and their culture positively portrayed in literature. I want each child to see themselves and their experience in these books.
